Spanish translations: It is key to know your source like you know your target and vice versa

7/18/2013 by Susana Schultz

It sounds like an obvious thing, but so many people don’t realize how critical that is. We translators know it all too well. But, some companies use their in-house people who took Spanish in high school to do their Spanish translations and they think that they are producing quality materials. Then they contact professional Spanish translation services like ours to “edit” or “proofread” the sub-standard translations they have.

As a rule, we will not proofread or edit translations done by machines or by laymen. Many times, they contact us to proof something done by another professional translation company because one of their employees or one of the clients complained about the quality of the document. The majority of the time, we evaluate it and it is a very good translation and we tell the company that we couldn’t do a better job if we tried. The translation they have is professional and good.

They are many opinions about translations and some people think that they have to change things that are very good because someone, probably unqualified, complained about it. The key is to use someone qualified who knows English as intimately as he/she knows Spanish. That is key! If you don’t understand subtleties, then translations can become very weird. And English and Spanish are full of those subtleties.
